Design Questions for SMEs
Design Questions for SMEs
This topic will be devoted to questions from the design team to SMEs, and to the replies thereto. If you have general comments about the simulation which are not directly related to a question, it would be preferred if you post them elsewhere.

Thanks,

Bruce

Re: Design Questions for SMEs
First Question: Mistakes in School Hostage Situations
Most of our SMEs are in school security or law enforcement, but I would still be happy to see responses to this question relating to any of the roles our players will have in this scenario, to wit, Police, Fire, EMS, School, and Public Works (if applicable).

The very general question with which I would like to start is this: What are some typical mistakes that are likely to be made in dealing with school hostage situations -- either historical or, from your own anecdotal knowledge -- that we might include as possibilities in our scenario.

In particular, any such mistakes that could be avoided by a thorough understanding of the Incident Command System would be appreciated, for obvious reasons.

Any replies that are posted here will automatically come to me via email.

Thanks,

Bruce

Re: First Question: Mistakes in School Hostage Situations
rushing in would be a fatal mistake many times the info we are given does not "jive" with aq gut feeeling and as responders we have a tendancy to go see what is going on first maybe before the scene is secure IE inital call for student down in cafateria it isnt relayed to us until later that they are down because of a GSW gunshot wound

when being called to standby at a hostage situation or a shooting many ems and fire will park were they can get the best view of the goings on so make sure there are consiquiences to staging to close ems is often left out of the info loop until the vary last we may be called to stand by but only know itis a shooting not that it is multiple shooters and that they are activley shooting until we are pulling up in the wrong place

as Ems we have a tendancy of to hell with every thing else and do not regaurd a crime scene as important yes there are many tht so very well at all these things but there are many that do not the crime scene can be destroyed by driving to close and by moving furniture to get to a patient maybeas a afetr cretigue if the resopnding crews are not to regaurd this as a crime scene then they will loose points and destory the scene

Joe --

Good points. I look forward to responses from people in other fields.
